Cherokee County Prostitution Ring Ended

A report dated November 7, 2008 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution by Nancy Badertscher stated that in Chrokee County six people were arrested for sex crimes on suspicion of operating an illegal massage parlor. This case involves the internet, sex, and drugs. The operation was being advertised on the popular website Craigslist.com and was operating out of a house in the Hickory Flat community. A six week investigation preceded the arrests and raid.

Spokesman Sgt. Jay Baker for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s department said charges against the suspects ranged from illegal drug possession, masturbation for hire, and pimping. While serving a search warrant on the house, crime scene investigators also found $15,000 in cash, a laptop, marijuana and heroin.

Two clients were also found at the time but the Sheriff’s department did not immediately charge them. Many aspects of the law are touched here do to the fact that this case involves the internet to solicit business and that business being sex and or illegal drug distribution.

Atlanta Marijuana Growing Operation Halted

Kathy Jefcoats of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on October 3, 2008 that Sheriff’s deputies from Cherokee County have discovered a marijuana growing operation. The operation was being carried out from within a home in the Golden Hills subdivision near Towne Lake Pkwy and Bells Ferry Rd. Sheriff’s deputies had responded to a domestic dispute call when they noticed the operation.

At the scene, deputies arrested Nicholas Lyle 29, and Michael Ammons, 35 on manufacturing marijuana charges. Sheriff’s deputies called in drug agents who obtained a search warrant for the house. The search warrant uncovered 98 plants and equipment for the growing of marijuana. Street value for the plants was placed at about $117,600.

Under the Family Violence Act, Michael Ammons was also charged with battery and is being held on $21,000 bond. What was initially a call to the authorities for a domestic dispute turned into a very serious situation with very serious repercussions for the accused.

At a time like this you will need only the most experienced Atlanta defense attorneys available. JOHN PAUL STEVENS CAN FINALLY REST EASY

During the course of the presidential election we heard all about the economy, battling terrorism, cutting taxes, and saving the environment. But for myself, as a criminal defense attorney, there was one over riding issue: Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Originally a Ford appointee in the mid 1970s, Mr. Stevens has been serving on the US Supreme Court for over thirty years. You don't hear much about him in the news. He is less colorful than many of the other more outspoken justices. When they show the photos of all the justices in the New York Times after a big opinion has been handed down, he is the gentleman in the bow tie who appears to be markedly older than the other justices. In fact, Mr. Stevens is now well into his 80s. My biggest fear this election season was we would lose Mr. Stevens' wisdom on the court and he would be replaced by a Palin/McCain appointee. This was just too much for me, an independently minded voter who leans left on some issues, right on others.

You see, Mr. Stevens has usually been over the years that crucial 5th vote on all those Supreme Court opinions involving our First, Fourth and Sixth Amendment rights as well our right to privacy. He is one of the justices most concerned about the rights of the criminally accused and for making sure that our zealous pursuit of justice does not mean we toss out our constitutional guarantees protecting all of us from unjust and unconstitutional criminal prosecution by the government. As for the second amendment, he and I respectfully disagree. But hey, no one's perfect.

So Justice Stevens, I say relax, enjoy, and perhaps think about retiring sometime in the next two or three years to a life of pleasure and peace after work so well done for so long. It is safe to do so now and thank you for remaining on the bench these long past eight years as the court hung in the balance between established precedent and reactionary revisionism. By remaining on the bench, you have ever so quietly, and ever so completely, protected all of us from losing many of our most cherished constitutional liberties. May God bless you, as he has blessed us with your long life and service.

3 Atlanta Teens Killed Over Weekend

Tim Eberly and Ralph Ellis reported in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on November 09, 2008 that the trend of violent crimes in Atlanta in recent weeks has continued with three shootings over the weekend that ended the lives of three teenagers. All these young lives were taken early the morning of November 9th. The first youth to be killed was Joshua Richards, a 17 year old senior at Riverdale High School. Richards was in the backseat of a vehicle at a parking lot for a Jonesboro nightclub when he was shot to death. Richards was one of 10 children and was remembered as the peacekeeper of the family according to a family friend Vivian Maiden. “He had a way of making jokes and calming down the situations,” she said. As shortstop for Riverdale’s varsity baseball team he aspired to earn a scholarship to play college ball.

Details of what led up to the shooting are that Richards and his friends had stopped by the movies before going to the south Atlanta club. Inside the movie theater Richards was confronted by other young men who wanted to fight. Upon exiting the theater they were followed and shot while Richards sat in the back seat of a Jeep. Two of his friends riding in the auto were injured. Richards death is the second Riverdale High death in the same amount of weeks, prompting a crisis intervention team being dispatched to the school.

The other deaths happened on the southbound I-85 near Buford Highway when Blanca Badillo, 17 and Policarpo Luviano, 18 were shot while driving. Details were still being investigated for this horrific violent crime in Georgia.

These sad realities will no doubt leave family and friends scarred for life.
